Alternating Search at Two Locations

چکیده

In this paper we introduce a new class of search problem which we calìalternating search'. Two searchers starting at given points in diierent search regions, who can move alternately with speed one, or (as a limiting case) simultaneously with combined speed one, seek to nd (reach) an object in least expected time. The hidden object is stationary and its location is given by a known distribution over the union of the two search regions. An important special case is thèDouble Linear Search Problem' in which both search regions are innnite lines, and which has been shown to be equivalent to thèAsymmetric Rendezvous Search Problem on the Line' (ARSPL). The general results proved here are applied in a concurrent paper of Alpern and Beck to prove that the strategy conjectured by Baston and Gal to be optimal for the convex ARSPL is indeed optimal. Our general results are concerned with determining the method of interleaving two given distributions so as to minimize the rst moment of the resulting distribution.

Estimating the cardinal temperatures of germination for Ipomoea hederaceae and Cleome viscosa at constant and alternating temperature conditions

Extended abstract: Introduction: Reports indicate the invasion of two species of Ivy-leaved morning-glory (Ipomoea hederaceae Jacq) and Asian spider flower (Cleome viscosa L.) to summer crops fields such as soybeans in Golestan province. Considering the importance of knowing the cardinal temperatures of germination in the models for predicting the presence of weeds and consequently designing c...

A Visual Influence in the Discrimination of Auditory Location

The compellingness of the interaction between vision and auditory localization (the ventriloquist effect) was investigated using a discrimination task. A tone sequence was presented either from the same location or from two locations that alternated along the horizontal plane. In synchrony with the tones, lights were presented either at the same or at alternating locations. Subjects had to deci...

A Projected Alternating Least square Approach for Computation of Nonnegative Matrix Factorization

Nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) is a common method in data mining that have been used in different applications as a dimension reduction, classification or clustering method. Methods in alternating least square (ALS) approach usually used to solve this non-convex minimization problem.  At each step of ALS algorithms two convex least square problems should be solved, which causes high com...

Beauty Hinders Attention Switch in Change Detection: The Role of Facial Attractiveness and Distinctiveness

BACKGROUND Recent research has shown that the presence of a task-irrelevant attractive face can induce a transient diversion of attention from a perceptual task that requires covert deployment of attention to one of the two locations. However, it is not known whether this spontaneous appraisal for facial beauty also modulates attention in change detection among multiple locations, where a slowe...

Perceiving and counting sounds.

Observers counted sequences of 20-msec tones that were presented to the same spatial location or alternated between spatial locations. Counting accuracy increased with increases in the silent interval between tones and increased at a faster rate when the tones were presented to the same location. In the second study, subjects monitored the same sequences of tones for a probe tone that was eithe...
